Some common questions and answers about EV safety equipment

If you’re new to electric vehicle maintenance and repair, and you’re looking to equip yourself with the appropriate tools and safety clothing, it can be quite daunting.

Here’s a few questions we’ve been asked recently.

Q1. With Insulated Glove sizes 7 to 12 what is the best glove size when multiple people may be using the gloves?

A1. A good fit is important. A small hand will fit in a larger glove, but the user will lose some dexterity, when dexterity is already impacted by the glove! Always try to get the best possible fit for individual needs.

Q2 The EINTAC master kit includes boots and the lower priced Technician kit has a rubber floor mat. I assume the boots (rated 17,500 to 20,000v) offer better protection than the mat (rated to 1,000v)? Should I get both?

A2. The boots manufacturers claims are “allows high-voltage live working at up to 17kV, with every boot tested at 20kV”. The mat is rated to 1kV (1000v). Boots are more versatile in that you can move around, whereas the mat is only 1m x 1m (39” x 39”). Having said that, often the work task may be confined to a spot location, making the mat adequate and fit for purpose.

Q3. It appears that the helmet with integrated visor offers better protection than the goggles?

A3. Helmet versus goggles. On paper, protection is similar. It comes down to comfort for the wearer.

Q4. I see that EINTAC offers other clothing like coveralls and aprons. Since they are not part of the “Master Kit”, I am thinking that maybe I begin with the Master Kit and evaluate the potential need for additional equipment based on procedures outlined by manufactures for the tasks that present themselves to us in our shop?

A4. It’s a good idea to experiment with your needs. It’s no interest for us to supply goods that end up not getting used. We want you to be happy with your choices, and our advice. Hopefully you’ll be pleased and recommend us to others. If the goods are returned in as-new condition and in original packing, we’ll refund anything you buy but then find is unsuitable for your needs (within a couple of weeks of purchase). A re-stocking charge sometimes applies if these requests are not met.

Q5. The Master Kit includes window signs held on by suction cups. Are these adequate or are other barriers like cones or posts & chains considered necessary?

A5. The signs with suction cups are just another layer of protection and warning and rely on the worker A) seeing the sign and B) abiding by the sign. Barrier products are always better to keep workers away from harm.
