How to interlock a butterfly valve

If you use butterfly valves on critical processes, ensuring the valves are operated in the correct sequence can be achieved by adding an Alcatraz valve interlock from Valtorx.

Butterfly valves above 6” (DN150) often have a gearbox fitted to reduce the turning effort. For these valves, a multi-turn interlock is required.

For butterfly valves below 6”, these are usually quarter-turn movement through 90 ° with a lever.

Historically, valve interlocks for quarter turn valves have been bulky and heavy. However, with the constant evolution of Alcatraz valve interlocks, even small diameter butterfly valves can be fitted with the latest interlock which is small and compact.

The interlock connects with the drive stem and the bonnet or mounting flange on the valve, becoming an integral feature of the valve.

Where historically valve interlocks have been large, heavy and unwieldy, often placing undue weight burden on the valve and pipework, this latest device is compact and light weight, but without losing any of the integrity and robustness needed in valve interlocking.

As always, sequential control is the central functional requirement of a valve interlock system. i.e. ensuring that critical valves operate in the correct logical sequence, thereby negating the risk of over pressurization, cross contamination of liquids or gases, or ensuring safe conditions are achieved before (e.g.) opening vessel closures.
